After a short practice in San Diego, working for a busy family practitioner, Dr. Martinez decided that he would like the challenge of operating and managing his own practice. In 1972, he opened a family practice in Montclair, California. For the next twenty years, Dr. Martinez ran a very busy family practice that included caring for patients of all ages, from infants to senior citizens. The practice included caring for patients in the clinic and hospital, delivering babies, assisting on major surgery cases, working in the emergency room on weekends, and caring for injured workers under the workman's compensation act. During the last five years in the Montclair practice, Dr. Martinez specialized in the care and treatment of patients injured in automobile accidents that had been referred by attorneys in the area. This gave Dr. Martinez an opportunity to work closely with attorneys and to learn first hand about the legal system. Dr. Martinez testified in court many times, as an expert witness, as well as testifying in over 100 depositions. In the early eighties, Dr. Martinez started law school, stimulated by his exposure to the legal system in the area of personal injury. Dr. Martinez graduated from the University of La Verne 1aw school in 1994 and passed the California State Bar the same year, For the next fifteen years, Dr. Martinez practiced law on a part time basis, limiting his 1aw to medical malpractice. Over the fifteen years, Dr. Martinez has reviewed hundreds of potential medical malpractice cases and has tried eight cases to verdict. During this time, Dr, Martinez continued his full-time practice of medicine. While practicing in Montclair, Dr. Martinez took an active role in the medical staff functions of the hospital. He was at various times, Chief of staff, Chief of the Family Practice Department, Head of the Utilization Committee, and a member of the Medical Staff Executive Committee, and Governing Board of the hospital. From 1976-1980, Dr. Martinez served on the medical state licensing body of California, then called the Medical Board of Quality Assurance. This appointment to the Medical Board was made by the Governor's office of California. Dr. Martinez sold his medical practice in 1995. He has continued his work in the medical field by working in various clinics and urgent care centers in the area, as well as serving on the executive board of a large IPA, a independent group of doctors, contracting with major health carriers to care for managed care patients (HMOs). In this capacity, Dr. Martinez analyzed medical data generated by the managed care practice of the group, made utilization review decisions, helped to settle patient/doctor grievances, and negotiated contracts. Dr. Martinez hopes to continue practicing medicine for the next 10-15 years, while developing a medical-legal consultation practice taking advantage of his combined thirty years in the practice medicine and law.
